My friend, Jennifer Biggs, food writer our local newspaper, the Commercial Appeal is someone who I trust when it comes to food advice. So when she tells me that Pop's Deli is worth the drive, I believed her.
The trip from our house to Pop's took almost 40 minutes, but from first bite, my husband and I realized that it was so worth it.
Based on Jennifer's recommendation, I went for the Chilean sandwich, a hearty conglomeration of thinly sliced beef, guacamole, marinated string beans, tomatoes, Meunster cheese and Chilean hot sauce on a ciabatta bun. It sounds like it shouldn't work at all, but it was one of the most delicious and innovative sandwiches I've ever eaten.
Tom had the Pop's famous philly cheesesteak (traditional) and added lettuce and tomato (less traditional).
The portions were huge. You could definitely get two generous servings out of one sandwich. Friendly tip: spring the extra $2 for the homemade chips. You'll thank me.
They also serve hamburgers, chicken tenders, hot dogs, hot wings and an apparently delicious gyro (which is on my list for my next visit). You'll also find a variety of deli meats and cheese sold by the pound.
