Some Like It Cafeteria Style

I often pull up Urbanspoon on my mobile phone for tips on where to find the best local restaurants. I trust Urbanspoon contributers to point me in the right direction, culinarily speaking. Cafe 51 was voted by many users to be one of the best restaurants in northern Mississippi, so of course I had to try it out.

Cafe 51 is set in what looks like an old house. The premise is meat and three, served cafeteria style.

When you go down the line, you select your protein, your choice of vegetables (diners can select anywhere from one to four veggies - price increases accordingly), and bread (yeast roll, sweet or unsweet cornbread). I picked fried chicken (dark meat, of course), sweet potatoes and macaroni and cheese for my veggies (okay, so maybe veggie is a strong word; we'll call them sides :P) and sweet cornbread.

There are few things in life that excite me more than a well fried piece of chicken. The coating should be crisp and flavorful, the interior juicy. Cafe 51's fried chicken scored well on all points. It nearly perfect.  The potatoes were rich, satisfying and not overly sweet. The only real disappointment was the macaroni and cheese - it did not seem homemade, and the noodles were overcooked. The one negative to an otherwise delicious, southern meal.

Final Impressions: I'm glad I listened to my Urbanspoon peeps, who never steer me wrong. I'll definitely hit up Cafe 51 if I find myself roaming around Mississippi again. Although, I'm not sure if I'd make the almost one hour drive from Memphis solely to eat there.
