Most of my readers know, by now, that I'm a sucker for baked goods. I've got some serious love for local Memphis bakery, Muddy's, and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to check out a popular cupcakery (I think I may have just made up that word) AnnOlivia's.
AnnOlivia's is set in small strip mall off of the main drag in Hernando, MS. The bakery is named after the owner's three children: Ann, Andrew and Olivia.
This bakery has quite a lot of space, with the front designated as a dining area...
And the area behind the counter is set up for the baking and packaging.
I selected two cupcakes to take back and devour in the privacy of my hotel room.
My first one was red velvet (my favorite flavor)
The cake was moist, and the frosting was creamy and light at the same time. The cake-to-frosting ratio was spot on - an excellent rendition of a classic red velvet cake.
My second option was the cheesecake cupcake
I wasn't certain what to expect, as typical cheesecake is rather dense, while cupcakes are generally better if they're not too heavy. The cheesecake cupcake was actually a yellow cake, topped with vanilla buttercream frosting with a dollop of cream cheese frosting in the center. It was tasty, with all of the same textural attributes as the red velvelt, but the name was a tad misleading. There was way more vanilla than cheesecake going on in this cupcake.
Another interesting aspect of AnnOlivia's cupcakes is that they are topped with edible glitter, which means finding evidence of your cupcake consumption on your skin days after you've devoured them.
While AnnOlivia's is no Muddy's, it's definitely a tasty way for Mississippians to get their sugar fix.
Note: When I visited AnnOlivia's back in mid-February, they did not accept credit cards, so have your cash or check ready.
