In Part 3 of my Mississippi excursion, I revisited the Paula Deen Buffet at Harrah's Casino in Tunica. As my most dedicated readers may remember, I was less than enamored of this particular buffet during my last visit, but I figured I would give it another chance.
(In the interest of full disclosure, I must let you know that I did get a comp for this buffet - not so much for my hard-hitting food reporting, but rather, for my skillz at the blackjack tables. That being said, this freebie will not affect my impartiality.)
So, I only managed to snap a few of the setup before one of the servers threatened to call security.
Now, I filled my plate with many tasty options:
Let's talk about that mac and cheese for a second.
Now, there were two kinds of macaroni and cheese; they were both labeled "The Lady's Famous Mac N Cheese" The first looked like you'd expect
A delicious-looking (and tasting) conglomeration of eggs, cheese, butter and noodles baked to perfection.
And then this...
This "Lady's Famous Mac N Cheese" was neon yellow, a little gritty, and to be perfectly honest, I've had betterf rom a box. If faced with the choice of which macaroni to choose, go for the one that looks like your mom made it. You won't be sorry.
Strange mac n cheese notwithstanding, my dinner at Paula Deen's was much improved over my previous visit. The fried chicken was crispy while not being greasy, and the pulled pork was sweet and spicy. I actually piled my pork on top of cheesy grits for a tasty combo that had me going back for seconds. I finisehd my meal with a gooey bar, a tart and a couple of truffles.
Final Impressions: It's still no Lady and Sons, but I think the Paula Deen Buffet at Harrah's has finally found it's groove. Just avoid the nuclear mac and cheese (and the cheesy meatloaf) for the best dining experience. And, leave your camera stashed in your bag.
